BOY BAND BTS IS NOW JUST THE SECOND K-POP ACT TO HIT THE HOT 100 WITH A KOREAN SONG

Last week, korean boy band bts debuted their new ep love yourself: her on the billboard 200 at no. 7, becoming the first k-pop group to reach the chart’s top 10. That’s quite the accomplishment for the act, but at the same time, they added one more feat that few in their genre have ever managed.

Bts started a new song entitled “dna” at no. 85 on the hot 100, making them just the second act to ever front a song in korean on the listing, which measures the most popular 100 songs in america during any given week, regardless of language, style or genre. While many songs that start that low don't end up living on the listing for very long, "Dna" actually rose in its second frame, climbing to no. 67 this time around.

The first artist to score a korean-language hit single in the u.S. Was psy, who saw his song “gangnam style” climb all the way to no. 2 back in 2012. It lived on the hot 100 for months, and it held the title of the most-watched video of all time on youtube up until somewhat recently. Because of how popular “style” ended up being, psy was able to place several more songs on the chart, starting with his follow-up track, “gentleman,” which peaked at no. 5, granting him a second top 10 hit.
